†Around the beginning of the twentieth century, European immigrants arrived in the United States in their thousands. Most of the early arrivals were men seeking a new life for their families in a new country. They travelled in cramped, uncomfortable conditions for economic reasons, and not generally because of religious intolerance in their homeland. For almost all of these, entrance to the United States was not automatic, and they faced medical examination and questioning before being allowed into the country.
